Born in Cole, who was adopted as a baby and grew up in Morden, south London, began his career in musical theatre when he left school, before getting his break in films in the s. As a year-old he was taken in by comedy star Alastair Sim and his wife Naomi, who became a second mother to him, and Cole went on to star in a series of films and theatre shows with the Scottish star. Terry is caught inside a launderette, while it is being robbed.

As the police gather outside, Arthur tries to make some money by selling Terry's life story th the press. All Mod Cons. Arthur tries to sell Terry's flat out from under him. Meanwhile guest star Toyah Wilcox plays an unscrupulous landlady who is trying to evict a young couple from a house so she can sell it to a developer.

A Lot of Bull, and a Pat on the Back. Terry and Arthur are hired to move a bull from it's field to the owners new farm. Later they discover that they have stolen the bull, so they decide to find the men who hired them and get the bull returned to the rightful owner.

Terry is also hired by his stripper girl friend to discourage a stalker. National Pelmet. Arthur gets Terry to guard a racehorse before he runs in a big race, but the owner and trainer are out to con the bookies and leave Arthur and Terry out in the cold. All About Scoring, Innit. A young footballer Danny Varrow wants to sell his story to the press, so Terry to minds him until Arthur can arrange a deal.

Unfortunately Varrow is in debt to the local bookie, and the father of his latest conquest is also looking for him to talk about the little matter of sleeping with his daughter. Not a Bad Lad, Dad.

An old friend of Terry's has left her son at Terry's house, while she sorts her life out. Terry gets attached to the lad, but when his stepfather starts to cause trouble, Terry has to fight to save the two of them. A Nice Little Wine. Arthur gets into the wine business, but Clive his supplier gets robbed of Arthur's wine money, so it is up to Terry and Arthur to track down the thieves.

Diamonds are a Girl's Worst Enemy. While working for a gangsters wife,Rose Mellors the car Terry is driving is stolen along with a bag of diamonds which are hidden in the car, then follows a race to recover the diamonds before the police can trace the car.

The Old School Tie. An old friend of Terry's George Palmer has escaped from prison comes to see him to get help in overturning his sentence. With the help of a newspaper reporter Terry tracks down the real culprits and George gets compensation and a pardon.

The Beer Hunter. Arthur meets his old army mate Yorkie. After a night on the town, Terry is to drive them home, but after taking him to his hotel, he goes missing. After a long search it turns out that Yorkie went to a local Hooker and somehow has lost his trousers. With his wife on her way down to London, the hunt is on for a replacement pair. Terry help's out Des into delivering a car that that has been used in a robbery. The police pick up Terry when they find his fingerprints on the car but Arthur provides an alibi and he is released. Terry also minds a magistrate who is a shoplifter. Whose Wife is it Anyway. When an old friend of Arthur's gets injured in a so-called "hit and run accident" Terry gets involved in minding the villain's antique shop. All Things Brighton Beautiful. He had paid a skinhead to murder him after learning that he had terminal cancer, but when the diagnosis was proved false, he has tried to keep clear of the potential murderer.

The Immaculate Contraption. One Flew Over the Parents' Nest. Another Case of Van Blank. To take advantage of new rules concerning duty-free alcohol, Arthur, Ray and Dave take a van to Calais, planning to stock up on cheap booze. The Long Good Thursday. He demands to see Rosie, his wife, whom he suspects of having an affair with Luigi. Bring Me the Head of Arthur Daley. Violent bank robber Charlie Knowles, a life prisoner, has decided to get even with his former partners who all received lighter sentences.

Arthur, who sold him the getaway car that broke down and allowed police to arrest them, is set up on dangerous driving charges and cops a sentence of hours community service. Grant Gedley, a thrusting young executive determined to prove himself to his father, tries to sabotage Arthur by setting him up with police on hit-and-run charges.

Anxious to keep the peace and equally anxious to keep his son out of trouble, Don proposes that Arthur pleads guilty to all charges, in return for paying his fine. All Quiet on the West End Front. Arthur takes over a booth at a Business Expo, and sets up as a provider of services to busy executives — West End theatre visits, casinos, hard-to-get tickets for booked out shows etc.

The initial attempt is a disaster, but another one goes fairly well with satisfied customers. Ray is drawn into a fight with a hyperactive casino owner and also tries unsuccessfully to romance the Expo manageress.

This arouses the jealousy of his current girlfriend, a jazz singer. A Fridge Too Far. To sell a consignment of mopeds to The Pizza Man an unseen character , Arthur gets involved in complicated money-juggling. The Greatest Show in Willesden. The act goes down well with the punters - but Tommy Pickford suffers from heart trouble and can't continue the act every night. Then some karaoke gear that Arthur's rented from Mrs Gabadini is stolen from his van.

Although Del Boy in "Only Fools Waterman as Terry is perfectly legit in the role as he sympathetic hardman and the fact that he doesn't get lost under the giant shadow of Cole's tour de force is a testiment to Watermans skills as an actor.

I'd advise anyone who isn't familiar with the show to hunt for the early episodes and enjoy what was a very gritty and real drama, where Terry is clearly the main man whilst, at that point, Arthur is secondary in the writers minds Not that it deminishes his screen presence, just leaves you wanting more. Another important component to its success was its grand array of support players, from Dave the barman at everyones favourite watering hole, the Winchester, to dodgy geezers like Des the mechanic and the hilarious, bumbling Police who could never catch Arthur in the act.

The show did lose some of its hard edge as it veered off towards a comedic element but it always remained true to the characters, and as such the characters became the central theme. Other new characters in this revamped version were Sidney Livingstone as Bert Daley, Arthur's gullible, over-trusting brother and Ray's father , who views Arthur as a successful businessman and not a con-man and entrusts Ray into his care; Bert's wife and Ray's mum, Doreen Lill Roughley ; and Ray's recurring girlfriend Gloria Emma Cunningham , who is frustrated with Ray being torn between her and Arthur's lackey.

In the weeks leading up to the new series, Channel 5 launched a national advertising campaign to promote the show's return.

These featured a series of contemporary adverts on television, as well as billboards. Other promotions included advertisements on taxi receipts, a social networking campaign and branded beer mats, all designed to attract the young male audience Channel 5 was targeting. The Sun reported that Richie banned Waterman from appearing in the series remake, but Richie told fans to ignore this story, saying it would be an honour to be in the company of Waterman and Cole, let alone work with them on television.
