Read my mind 1. Report this review. Teen, 16 years old Written by Kingturnip26 May 21, The plot is genius, and the effects are amazing. Two things to worry about? The violence and gore, and the language. The movie says the f word every two seconds, and there are discussions about sexual retaliations between humans and aliens, and people making jokes like "did you wear a condom? Almost all scenes have scenes with significant amounts of blood, which include experiments, surgeries, wounds, missing limbs, and guns that cause people too explode with blood, and skin.
Overall, great movie, good for mature twelve year olds who can handle blood and ogre, and many dead things. This title contains: Positive role models. Teen, 13 years old Written by LukeCon August 16, A subtly allegorical sci-fi story; not appropriate for young kids District 9 has an allegorical theme to its core--which makes it more than just a sci-fi story.
This makes District 9 an allegory of the apartheid years in South Africa, and not just an allegory of the apartheid in South Africa, but also an allegorical portrayal of racism. The film editing in District 9 is also very effective--especially the documentary-style filmmaking. The use of interviews, news reports, and footage adds to the atmospheric realism of the film.
It makes the events of the film feel more realistic--and does so in an effective way. However, there are some very iffy elements in the film.
While racism is a theme displayed throughout, District 9 also has some positive themes. District 9 displays the danger of bias and racism, a thought-provoking theme displayed throughout the film which could be discussed after seeing the film.
Another positive theme in the film involves empathy, and the importance of using empathy; empathy is displayed as well in the film. While the main character at first displays prejudice towards the aliens, he starts to understand their struggles and shows empathy towards them. While the aliens may look intimidating, they ultimately have a good heart--and attempt to help the main character in his situation. Violence occurs frequently throughout the film--and sometimes can get bloody.
Many characters both humans and aliens are killed in tense scenes; blood is shown in several of these scenes. A character is tortured by being jabbed with a cattle prod; this propels his hand to shoot an alien; blood splatters are shown. High-tech firearms are used to kill aliens sometimes with a lot of force. A couple instances of discussion of sex with aliens; a brief image is shown which displays this sensitive parts are blurred out.
Prostitution is also discussed in the film, but not frequently neither graphically. Swearing is constant and unnecessary in the film. None of the language was needed in the film. Some of the swearing can be hard to hear due to the accents of some characters.
Not a lot of drinking in the film; however, there are a few instances of social drinking. Characters drink alcohol in a couple scenes; however, no drunkenness is displayed in the film.
Nonetheless, apart from the strong violence and language, District 9 is a very good movie that is more than just a sci-fi story of mistreatment of extraterrestrial life. It also handles allegorical themes about racism and the importance of empathy, which are thought-provoking themes worth discussing after watching the film.
The film editing also adds to the realism of the film's atmosphere, effectively enhanced by the documentary-style interviews, realistic footage, and news reports.
This makes the film more effective in realistically displaying the events. However, due to the violence and unnecessary language, I recommend District 9 for mature teens 16 and up, but give it 4 out of 5 stars. This title contains: Positive Messages. Positive role models. Other disturbing, but not violent per se, scenes involve the ongoing transformation of a man into an alien and we see the exoskeleton slowly growing from beneath his skin, causing abnormal wounds to appear on his flesh.
Two of his finger nails come off as well as a few teeth fall out. The verdict? District 9 is quite an amazing film that is original and keeps you entertained throughout the entire journey. That being said it is extremely violent and includes a lot of swearing. I can't actually say I recommend the movie because, due to the content, I don't recommend it to anyone. View at your discretion. Adult Written by December 21, And all other action films except this one and a few others.
Far from perfect, but this is still one of the best action films ever. This is one of those action films where you actually need a brain to understand it, not like that bullcrap transformers or Mission Impossible, where it looks like some child wrote the stupid, mindless script. This movie has actual depth, not just a few boring action seqences held up by a meaningless, mindless script. Parent Written by obnoxiousm November 30, I've used this in class before. I have a little anecdote for you before my review.
I was trying to explain to them just how nasty apartheid was, and they weren't getting it. They were middle schoolers. Finally, knowing the ultra-violent tastes of one of my troublemakers and having just seen the film myself, I asked, "Has anyone seen District 9?
The first thing I said was, "I can't believe your parents let you watch that. It was too much for me; I couldn't even look at the screen half the time. But, I know you guys, I know you seek this stuff out. This movie is horrifically violent and shouldn't be shown to kids who have a tendency to mimic violence or become desensitized. It will probably give those who don't fit the above nightmares.
Honestly, they're nightmares kids should be having. The only way to keep atrocities like this from happening is to keep talking about them until the underlying racism and fear that caused them is gone. District 9 has an important message about the value of all life and how carefully we have to guard ourselves against looking at others as less than us. I wish it could send that message without gore and the constant swearing and without seeing myself in the cheerfully judgemental Wickus , but it wouldn't really cut through the layers of desensitization and apathy in our culture without both the fantasy setting and the overstimulating violence and swearing.
This film has educational merit, but it's extreme enough that you should decide when your kids are ready for it. Unless they're extremely able to respond to violence in a mature way for their age, they probably won't be ready before high school. My students in middle school probably weren't ready for that movie, but their parents allowed them to see it.
The best I could do is try to help them find the abundant good buried under the mountains of gore and horror in this beautiful, terrible film. Peter Jackson really must have done some thinking about this one. The movie itself lacked in excitement. I was most definitely not on the edge of my seat, however the plot wasn't awful whatsoever. I would consider this to be your not-so-average, yet good action film. I must say that there is much gore and violence. There was way too much bad language.
The language is quite awful, I must confess. Racism in the form of humans putting down aliens is actually a topic which seems to be covered. The only highlight about the film is that it teaches to look past other's differences, and to help each other despite what color or race of person. All in all, the movie wasn't awful; however, it will not be one that I will watch again anytime soon.
Positive Messages. Parent of a year-old Written by mikeisawesome January 31, Boring but good! All of this is presented very seriously. Many of them are obvious, such as the action to move a race out of the city and to a remote location. Others will be more pointed in South Africa. Nor would it escape a South African ear that the alien language incorporates clicking sounds, just as Bantu, the language of a large group of African apartheid targets.
Wearing a sweater vest over a short-sleeve shirt, he walks up to alien shanties and asks them to sign a relocation consent form. He has little sense of caution, which is why he finds himself in his eventual predicament. This is achieved by giving them, but no other aliens, human body language, and little CJ even gets big wet eyes, like E.
They are certainly alien, all right. It is also a seamless merger of the mockumentary and special effects the aliens are CGI. But the third act is disappointing, involving standard shoot-out action. Despite its creativity, the movie remains space opera and avoids the higher realms of science-fiction.
